Distilled to the Essence

Details: With a nod to the art of found objects, Chris Beck and Kim Clayton both use cast off elements to create artwork with an iconic Southern flavor. Their Central Florida debut show will be a collaborative interpretation of Southern icons.

Clayton, from Myrtle Beach, SC, uses salvaged vintage elements in her paintings on wood panels. She often uses materials that she's found while combing the Southern beaches near her home. Beck, from Chattanooga, TN, works in salvaged steel that he welds and paints to resemble clothing. His party frocks, bell-bottom jeans, and Polo shirts become dimensional wall hangings.

Flagman

Details: Georgia artist Roger Ivens, known popularly as Ab the Flagman, has made a reputation for himself by creating large-scale wooden flag assemblages. As a child, his father's flag-draped coffin provided early inspiration for what would become his trademark subject.

In addition to the three-dimensional flags, Ab carves other enduring images of American culture, like eagles, the Statue of Liberty, and street scenes that feature musicians.

The show will also feature work inspired by his visit to Florida this year. Surfers, palm trees, ocean piers, and ospreys are finding their way into his repertoire as a reflection of his surroundings.

The Art of Living Southern

Details: A two woman show for Lila Graves and Lucy Hunnicutt has been in the works for several years, ever since Jeanine first met Lucy. "I've worked with Lila for over ten years and I saw a connection between the women the minute I brought Lucy's work into my gallery. It's more than their subject matter and medium. These women have deep, deep Southern roots," says Taylor.

Both women produce canvases and wood panels with a vibrant color palette. The show will feature paintings that reflect life with a southern flair, from front porch swings to strawberry fields to storytelling and barefoot children at play.

"In April, we always take the time to make room for new art that will arrive for our summer show. The IRS event got its name when we timed our first one around the tax deadline. It helps us with our spring cleaning you might say", owner Jeanine Taylor explains.

Hand picked by Taylor, a special selection of art will be offered at progressively reduced prices throughout the weekend:

Straw into Gold

Details: Alabama folk artist Butch Anthony will make his Central Florida debut for the show "Straw Into Gold." Anthony has coined the phrase "intertwangled" to describe his sculptural works made from found objects and salvaged treasures.

"Butch has a knack for turning one man's trash into another's treasure. Don't let his homespun demeanor fool you. He's part mad scientist, part genius," says Taylor. The centerpiece for this show will be a large scale school of fish installed in the middle of Taylor's spacious Sanford gallery. Each freestanding fish is assembled carefully from Anthony's collection of found objects.

Taylor has also requested Anthony to include a selection of the circus side show banners that he creates. These oversized canvases feature freaks and oddities of nature that will be a humorous addition to the show.

Anthony will be present for the opening reception from 6 - 9pm on January 22.

Art in the Garden VIII

Details: For the last seven years, gallery owner Jeanine Taylor has presented the very freshest folk and contemporary art along with foliage plants and ferns from Apenberry's Gardens. The combination is a welcome oasis in the midst of Sanford's Downtown Historic District.

This "mixed bouquet" show includes new work of artists from all over the Deep South and will feature garden themed work by North Florida artist Lucy Hunnicutt. Known for her bright images of rural scenes, Hunnicutt is a self-taught artist who didn't begin to paint until her late 30's. The themes in her work pay homage to her southern roots.

Also included, for children of all ages, will be Zimmerman's "other dimension animals" sculpted from styrofoam packing materials. His favorite subjects are animals and especially flying animals. He also enjoys painting communities from a different dimension. Some call this subject matter and style 'visionary abstract expressionism'. Zimmerman feels it doesn't matter what it is called. He is at peace when he paints.





6th Annual Doggie Art Festival

Details: Jeanine will be bringing a new collection of Theresa Disney's darling dogs and other animals for this fun festival. Theresa's paper mache canines will be available for adoption to good art lover's homes. Come pick out a well trained pooch of your very own! The festival is a benefit for the Sebastian Haul Fund that assists in transporting greyhound dogs to new homes.



IRS Event

Details: Back for a second year, this short term event (dubbed the Inventory Renewal Show) follows tax day by a hair. So that we can make room for summer inventory, Jeanine will hand pick a variety of art to be offered at special prices. On Friday, pieces selected for the show will be 10% off; on Saturday 20% off; and Sunday, 30% off. A portion of the IRS pieces will be available on the web. Prices and availability will be updated on the web by noon each day.

Opening Reception for The Jewelry Show: Art of Adornment

Guest Artist: Jane Carpenter, Suzanne Ficquette, Robin Marks
Details: Local bead artists Robin Marks and Suzanne Ficquette will make their debut with a stunning group of hand made bracelets and cuffs. These two sisters are quite compatible when it comes to making jewelry; they both love colorful components and a sense of the slightly funky.

In addition, Florida artist Jane Carpenter will visit the gallery for the opening reception and bring a wide selection of her intricate silver pendants, pins, necklaces, and earrings. Jane uses a multi-step process based on an ancient technique called reverse painting. Jane has adapted this old tradition by painting on Lucite and then setting her finished pieces in embossed silver. She is inspired by nature and her menagerie of cats as well as mystical characters that serve as guides to inspire her.

Join us in the gallery for a wonderful opportunity to mingle with artists and take home a unique treasure for yourself or in preparation for surprising your sweetheart on Valentine's Day.

Let Your Lightshine Buttermilk Baby

Details: Jeanine Taylor Folk Art will host a one woman show for Ruby C. Williams, one of Florida's matriarchs of folk art with a national reputation. Williams is best known for her passions: farming, preaching, and painting. The show will feature a broad selection of Williams' produce signs, whimsical sayings, and a cast of fictional characters that she has created from her imagination, like Ms. Sugar Sugar and Bonnie Bon Bonnie. Williams was a 2005 recipient of the Florida Folk Heritage Award and has had her work exhibited at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in Washington D.C.



Art in the Garden VII

Details: This "mixed bouquet" brings favorite folk art from all over the Deep South as well as some fresh new surprises. For six years, art collectors have flocked to this indoor, climate controlled art show with all the ambiance of an outdoor garden.

This year, we are introducing the art of Tennessee artist, Nathaniel Mather, whose whimsical work features elements of collage and painting.

Many other artsists to be featured: John "Cornbread" Anderson, Theresa Disney, Lila Graves, Pat Juneau, Mary Klein, Woodie Long, Mark Peyton, John Eiseman, Terrell Powell, Mary Proctor, Sarah Rakes, Roy Minshew, Jim Shores, Harry Jennings, and more.

Solid Memories, Art by Adam Farrington

Guest Artist: Adam Farrington here for the Opening Reception, March 1 from 6-9pm
Details: Described as one of New Orleans' most exciting young artists, Farrington creates intricate sculptures that combine dichotomous objects in a first glance whimsical manner. Upon closer investigation, Farrington's creations often speak to urban sprawl and decay.

Influenced early on by artists such as Alexander Calder, his work has been exhibited widely in New Orleans and New York City. Farrington has received commissions by SONY and the House of Blues and his work is in numerous private collections.

This will be Farrington's Florida debut.




Still Standing

Details: Contemporary outsider artist Michael Banks has taken the folk art world by storm. He makes his Florida debut in a show coinciding with African American History month. His signature medium is a layer of roofing tar on wood into which he scratches an outline of figures, animals or flowers and then paints over with vivid colors. After having sell out shows in Chicago, New York and Atlanta, Banks brings a collection of new work speaking to his struggle and ultimate recovery from growing up in the Alabama projects and combatting a family history of addiction.

History's Charming Faces: The Sanford Series

Art in the Garden at Apenberry's, 2007

Details: Join us at Apenberry's, the upscale garden shop in Winter Park, Florida one block east of Park Avenue. For the sixth year, we will showcase a mixed bouquet of favorite folk artists and some fresh surprises. Opening reception is set for June 23 from 11am - 3pm with a special program at 1pm, "Folk Art in the Garden," presented by Wayne McGonigal, Educator and Horticulturist.

Additional programming is scheduled for Saturday, June 30 with Liz Salierno, owner of Ambiance Design Studio, presenting "Incorporating Art into your Home Decor" at 1pm.

Jeanine will be visiting the garden shop on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays during the run of the show to answer questions about collecting folk art and to share some of her newest acquisitions.

Details: Visit us during the month of October to check out our featured Artist of the Month - Jane Carpenter. Her intricate and vibrant designs are inspired by her love of animals, flora and fauna, and the sea. Using a reverse painting technique dating from the 4th century, she handpaints the designs on the back of Lucite using tiny brushes and toothpicks. The paintings are then set in silver, each a colorful and detailed story.
