Retrospectively Yours Art by Kurt Zimmerman
Dates: May 01, 2009 to May 28, 2009 Time: Gallery Hours, Sun and Mon 12 - 5p, Tue - Sat 10a - 6p Location: 211 East First Street, Sanford, FL Description: Kurt Zimmerman is one of Florida's folk artists and a hidden treasure - he is collected and celebrated more outside of his home state. An emigrant of Germany, he grew up in New York State and enlisted in the army after high school. He performed missions over his homeland during World War II that deeply affected his emotional health. He returned to the U.S. and was hired to work on the Apollo project for General Electric. More stress and depression lead him to quit his job and turn to art for therapy. Zimmerman now lives in peace. His favorite subjects are animals and especially flying animals. He also enjoys painting communities from a different dimension. Some call this subject matter and style 'visionary abstract expressionism'. Zimmerman feels it doesn't matter what it is called. "My work is a direct expression of entities in contact with me from different dimensions. By bringing them into this world through my art, I hope to make viewers aware of the greater dimensionality of life—a view very different form the normal day to day reality we perceive." Zimmerman's work has been shown at the Henry Boxer Gallery in London and numerous national and international galleries. His work is included in the City of Orlando's permanent collection and the collection of the Mennello Museum of American Art. Please join us as we offer a collection of the artist's work that spans 1997-present. Also included, for children of all ages, will be Zimmerman's "other dimension animals" sculpted from styrofoam packing materials. Opening Reception and Meet the Artist Friday, May 1, 2009 from 6-9 p.m. Join us for German inspired refreshments to celebrate the artist's heritage. Image Art to the Right: Crow |
