**Due to Hurricane Milton, Florida Gothic will be postponed to Saturday, October 19th.**

From the western corner of the Bermuda Triangle to the heart of the Villages, the strangeness of the state is far reaching and lends a wellspring of inspiration to five Floridian self-taught artists.

Look forward to featured art from Alyne Harris, Rick Kilby, Melissa Menzer, Jon Napoles and the late Kurt Zimmerman.

Each artist will shine a spotlight on what lurks beneath the surface of tannin waters found in their home state and provide a visual key of Florida Gothic architypes.

A bookend to last fall’s Southern Gothic blockbuster show, Florida Gothic narrows the field of vision to the dark side of the sunshine state. Join us!

Born in 1943, Alyne Harris has lived in Gainesville, Florida virtually all of her life and is a distant relative of sculptor, Jesse Aaron. Harris has always felt the compulsion to create. As a child she would rather draw in the sand on the playground than play with the other children. Her cherished heritage and connections to the past are celebrated in her engaging art.

Harris' paintings call on viewers to travel the paths of their own recollections, an exchange that becomes part of the work itself. Her work reminds the viewer that revisiting the past can connect us with the present and the future.

Rick Kilby (born 1964) spent much of his childhood playing in the woods around Hogtown Creek in North Central Florida. Two of his biggest creative influences growing up were his resourceful father, who kept every scrap of wood or piece of metal for a project to be determined later, and his grandmother’s attic, chocked full of Victoriana. A graphic designer since 1986, Rick’s art has been shown at CityArts, Crealde, and the Cade Museum in Gainesville.

Melissa loves to scour flea markets and second hand stores for the items that make her sculpted personalities truly one of a kind. For as long as she can remember, she has loved to sculpt people and animals out of clay.

Her imagination is her biggest talent. Melissa’s parents were artists and antiques dealers, so you can see their influence rubbing off in her nostalgic style.

Jon Napoles Headshot.JPG

Jon Napoles was born in Ocala, Fl but grew up in Miami. After Hurricane Andrew ravaged the area, Jon moved with his family to Detroit before settling back in Lake County, Fl. His preferred medium is acrylic paint on reclaimed windows, which he paints in reverse (painting the foreground and top details of his subjects first from the backside of the glass).

His art has been showcased at the Orlando Museum of Art for a solo show, Devil City. He has enjoyed multiple sold out shows at the Mennello Museum of Art’s annual Indie Fest and Stardust Video and Coffee’s acclaimed Grandma Party Bazaar.

1925 - 2017

We are honored to feature work from the late Florida artist, Kurt Zimmerman, in Florida Gothic. Born in Germany, Zimmerman’s family moved to Schenectady, New York, when he was four years old. After serving in the United States Army in both World War II and the Korean War, Zimmerman attended Hudson Valley Technical Institute, graduating with a degree in electrical technology.

Zimmerman says, “My work is a direct expression of entities in contact with me from different dimensions. By bringing them into this world through my art, I hope to make viewers aware of the greater dimensionality of life – a view very different from the ‘normal’ day-to-day reality we perceive.”
